Shipping Across The Border - What You Should Know
Initial quotes using this method seem less expensive because they do not include your provincial sales taxes or any of the brokerage fees which are charged on delivery. Here are some important things to consider before handing over your credit card info.
Drop shipments direct from the manufacturer are not sent requiring a customers signature on delivery. The courier can leave it at your door and call it done. Got good neighbours ?
Any warranty components or service parts will be drop shipped in from the USA incurring more fees, long delays and mounting costs. Some US companies do not even honor warranty claims from Canadian customers. Check those terms and conditions policies carefully. We have been receiving an increasing volume of customers left to their own devices to patch up a "bargain" interior. We can only service our own customers.
You will be charged brokerage, any carrier service fees, taxes and any duty on delivery. The couriers charge heavily for this service which is not paid by the shipper, but by you, the consumer.
Fees can easily reach in the hundreds of dollars on an average interior and are also taxable.
In a hurry ? Many experience importation delays at the border of up to two weeks while the item waits for clearance approval. It is now common practice for couriers to hold an item at the border pending a payment to cover the importation charges. The total is often not provided until the item is delivered with the paperwork, at which time you have already paid the bill.
You can be assessed duty on your shipment regardless of the country of manufacture if the paperwork was filed incorrectly or forms omitted. It is up to you to fight for the refund.
You will have to pay the amount claimed as due on delivery regardless of if that amount is correct or refuse your package.
If you refuse your package, the shipper will want to charge you to recover the freight costs and they already have your funds in the form of the sale. If you accept the package, you will have to fight with the freight company for a correction on your bill.
